(Update: Microsoft has released the name) Readit for Windows 10’s development cancelled due to troll reserving its brand identity

UPDATE: Great news! Microsoft has released the name “Readit” for the actual developers to use, and it’s been reserved by the developers. Get ready for Readit on Windows 10 🙂

Readit, one of the best third-party Reddit client was supposed to be coming to Windows 10 as a universal app. Today, the developers announced that they’re cancelling the development of the app indefinitely. Why?

According to the developers,  they’re unable to submit Readit for Windows 10 to the Windows store due to a troll reserving the name “Readit”. The developers are also claiming that the Store team over at Microsoft has told them that there’s nothing that can be done in this case. Here’s the full statement:

“They won’t even tell me when it expires, let alone who it is. There is nothing they can do apparently (I question this). I tried to reserve it last year, same thing happened. It lasts a full year. I try this year, same result. Waited another 2 months (since it can take 2 months after expiration to release) after it was supposed to expire, same result. They said it was reserved by someone else this time. Guess we are screwed with that.”

If you’re wondering why the developers aren’t renaming the app, the reason is pretty simple: the developers have an agreement with the current branding (Readit) and the use of Reddit’s API. Interestingly enough, a Reddit user who claims to work at Microsoft’s Windows Store team has promised to investigate this issue.

The Readit app may come to Windows 10 as a universal app soon, or it may not – for now, we just have to wait and see what happens next. We’ll make sure to keep you guys updated on this.
