Before Nokia came on board we had numerous OEMs making Windows Phones, but Nokia’s close relationship with Microsoft, which finally culminated in Microsoft’s purchase of their handset division, quickly muscled out the other companies.
Microsoft is however clearly winding down their 1st party handset business, and cultivating 3rd party OEMs such as Vaio, Acer , Alcatel and even HP, and some of the handsets we have seen already are very competitive with Microsoft’s direct offerings.
With Windows 10 Mobile Microsoft has also taken over direct support of the software side of the handset, meaning updates for the OS will come independent of who the OEM is. In terms of hardware support, this is now far from the golden days of Nokia Care, and i don’t think as big a factor as it used to be any more.
It seems the time has come to separate out the fans of the Windows phone OS from the fans of Nokia. Are you prepared to buy a Windows Phone handset from a 3rd party OEM? Let us know in the poll below.
