NPD recently published their report on the US console gaming market for July. According to NPD’s report, the PlayStation 4 is still the top console for July. Surprisingly enough, the PlayStation 4’s games are the software for July as well. Now, what’s interesting is that Microsoft’s Xbox One sales was up by 44% compared to July 2014. Additionally, Xbox 360 games were the second highest in July – which is probably because of the recently announced Backwards compatibility feature. Liam Callahan from NPD stated:
“Consumers may have felt safer buying 360 games knowing that they will be able to play them on Xbox One if they choose to upgrade.”
On the other hand, Sony seems to be pretty happy with PS4 topping the sales yet again. A Sony representative stated:
“We are truly humbled by the success of the PS4, and we would like to thank gamers for making it the top-selling console and No. 1 in software sales in the United States in July,”
It’ll be pretty interesting to see if the Xbox One sales increase in the coming months as Microsoft introduced a couple of new games and features at Gamescom, as well as E3. It’s worth noting that Xbox One’s game streaming to Windows 10 feature may also improve the console’s sales in the coming months.
