At this year’s E3, Microsoft’s focus was all about games, just games. For the full 90 minutes of press briefing, Microsoft talked about all the first party and 3rd party games coming to Xbox platform. The surprising part was that Microsoft didn’t even talk about games on Windows and Windows Phone platforms. Phil Spencer is the head of gaming at Microsoft, which includes games on Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone platforms. He responded to the lack of any information on PC and mobile gaming at E3 to Polygon,
“I’m head of gaming at Microsoft,” Spencer said. “When we’re doing gaming strategy, gaming focus inside the company, that’s my job. I think in a lot of ways, you could argue gaming on Windows has never been more healthy in that the biggest of the big franchises, League of Legends, World of Tanks, those things dwarf a lot of what we’re doing in this console space in terms of users and monetization. They’re all on PC.”
Even though Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft’s success, Microsoft felt E3 is not the appropriate place to talk about it. For them, E3 is a console show and an Xbox show, and Xbox is the brand millions of people want to watch on TV to know about upcoming games.
Do you agree with Phil?
