On May 20, 2025, NBCUniversal’s Peacock announced a major upgrade to its Android app, embracing Jetpack Compose to improve performance across devices. With more users switching between phones, tablets, and foldables, the team rebuilt the interface to handle various screen sizes without glitches or reloads.
Peacock’s developers used the WindowSizeClass API to define responsive layouts that adjust automatically. They combined this with Kotlin Coroutines and Flows to maintain a fluid UI as users resize or rotate their screens. Testing on Android Studio’s emulator helped them fine-tune the experience for edge cases.

“The app feels more native, more fluid, and more intuitive across all form factors,” said Diego Valente, Head of Mobile at Peacock. Users can start watching on a phone and continue on a larger screen without interruption.
The update also positions Peacock for Android XR, Google’s upcoming immersive platform. The groundwork laid for adaptive layouts will help the app support features like multi-angle sports viewing and spatial metadata overlays.
This move aligns with Google’s broader push for adaptive Android development, as highlighted at Google I/O 2025. Peacock’s shift to Compose signals a commitment to future-ready streaming.
