We reported a few days ago that pre-orders for the retail version of the Oculus Rift would start today, January 6, and sure enough the page is live as we speak. At the time the pricing wasn’t revealed, but heading over to the source link nets you the headset, sensor, Oculus Remote, cables, Xbox One Controller, EVE: Valkyrie, and Lucky’s Tale games all for $599, excluding taxes and shipping. Delivery is expected for May of this year and the limit is one per customer. The preorder page also has a tool you can use to make sure that your PC is fully capable of running the VR headset.
In response to the pricing, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey had this to say on his twitter:
“To reiterate, we are not making money on Rift hardware. High end VR is expensive, but Rift is obscenely cheap for what it is.”
“It is obscenely cheap in the same way a $599 120″ 4K OLED TV would be obscenely cheap – more for 599 than most products.”
