With today’s Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18963 (20H1) Microsoft has revealed a new initiative to bring the venerable Notepad note-taking app to the Microsoft Store.
A built-in app for more than 30 years, Microsoft has been adding numerous features to the app over the last year, including expanded line ending support, wrap-around search, and indicating when there’s unsaved content, auto-saving content and more.
Each of these updates, however, had to be accompanied by a new build of the OS, but starting with Windows 10 20H1 Microsoft will be delivering updates to the app via the Microsoft Store.
Microsoft notes that this will allow Microsoft the flexibility to respond to issues and feedback outside the bounds of Windows releases.
I suspect Microsoft is planning the same treatment for other bundled Windows 10 apps, including the much-loved Paint app.
