WPDang reports that an exploration of the Windows 8 registry from the recent Consumer Preview release for the first time provides direct evidence for the increasingly strong rumours that Windows Phone 8 will run on the NT Kernel.

In the registry one of the versions of Windows 8 whichs shows up is PhoneNT.  WPDang reports this was not in the earlier preview of WIndows 8 released last year.

The Windows 8 kernel will allow Microsoft to support a much more diverse set of technologies, including external storage, USB Host and a much wider range of processors and screen resolutions in Windows Phone 8, and we should see increasing evidence for this over the next few months.
