We all know Microsoft Surface Book can be bought with a discrete GPU. Microsoft has only mentioned that it is a NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Processor and they didn’t reveal any technical specifications of it. Microsoft didn’t announce the model name of the GeForce processor as they have built a custom GPU for Surface Book working with NVIDIA. We have confirmed that Surface Book features a Maxwell architecture-powered GeForce GPU with 1GB of video memory. I think this custom GPU will be more or less equal to GeForce GTX 950M in terms of power and performance.
Maxwell is NVIDIA’s next-generation architecture for CUDA compute applications. Maxwell introduces an all-new design for the Streaming Multiprocessor (SM) that dramatically improves energy efficiency. Improvements to control logic partitioning, workload balancing, clock-gating granularity, compiler-based scheduling, number of instructions issued per clock cycle, and many other enhancements allow the Maxwell SM (also called SMM) to far exceed Kepler SMX efficiency.
