Microsoft today acknowledged that it is one of the brain behind the Massachusetts legislation against companies that use data collected from computers at schools. Microsoft said that the bill is aimed at Google Apps business practices. The bill is aiming to restrict the commercial use of data gathered for ad targeting, etc, while children use computers at public schools.

Microsoft commented about this matter with the below statement,

“We believe that student data should not be used for commercial purposes; that cloud-service providers should be transparent in how they use student data; and that service providers should obtain clear consent for the way they use data. We expect that students, parents and educators will judge any proposed legislation on its merits.”
