Microsoft has today promoted Brad Smith as the President and Chief Legal Officer. Brad was executive vice president of legal and corporate affairs since 2011. Satya today announced this change to Microsoft employees in an email. Satya wants Brad to play a bigger role in “strengthening our external relationships and representing the company publicly” as well as working on initiatives regarding privacy, security, accessibility, environmental sustainability and digital inclusion.
In this role Smith plays a key role in representing the company externally and in leading the company’s work on a number of critical issues including privacy, security, accessibility, environmental sustainability and digital inclusion, among others. He also leads a team of business, legal and corporate affairs professionals spanning 55 countries. These teams are responsible for the company’s legal work, its intellectual property portfolio, patent licensing business, and the company’s government affairs, public policy, corporate citizenship and social responsibility work. He is also Microsoft’s corporate secretary and its chief compliance officer.
