Microsoft Moving MSN Under Windows Division

MSN home page

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella today announced his employees via a memo that they are moving MSN team to the Windows division. Before this change, MSN was part of Applications and Services team headed by Qi Lu. Now, it will be part of Windows team headed by Terry Myerson. MSN mainly gets traffic because of being the default home page in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer team is already part of Windows division.

Last year, Business Insider reported that there is an internal fight going on at Microsoft over the default home page of Internet Explorer.

  • Derrick Connell, who runs Bing, wants IE to simply default to Bing.com.
  • Brian MacDonald, the corporate vice president who previously oversaw Bing Apps and MSN wanted MSN home page to be the default.
  • Terry Myerson, head of Windows, wants it to default to something related to Windows to promote it.

I guess this organizational change from Satya should clear these fights inside Microsoft.
