Microsoft keeps Surface backward compatibility promise with latest Surface Pro 3 firmware upgrade

Microsoft has just documented it’s August 15 firmware update for the Surface Pro 3. This update adds support for the new Surface Pro’s Type covers, so users who still run the old Surface Pro 3 will be able to purchase new type covers and leave their PCs feeling just like new.

Here’s the full changelog:

  • Surface Smart Cover Backlight – System device: 3.0.0.0 Enables support for Surface Pro Type Cover and the Surface Pro Signature Type Covers.
  • Surface PTP Filter – HID 1.0.173.1:  Enables support for Surface Pro Type Cover and the Surface Pro Signature Type Covers.
  • Surface Fingerprint Sensor Driver – Biometric device  : 2.2.11.0 Enables support for Surface Pro Type Cover and the Surface Pro Signature Type Covers.
  • Surface Pro Type Cover Integration – HID 1.0.2.0: Enables support for Surface Pro Type Cover and the Surface Pro Signature Type Covers.
  • Surface Type Cover Filter Device – Keyboards: 1.1.504.0 Enables support for Surface Pro Type Cover and the Surface Pro Signature Type Covers.

The update should have rolled out to Surface Pro 3 devices two weeks ago, but you can manually check for it in the WIndows Update menu.
