Lenovo’s folding device details leaked, might rock a Surface Book-like hinge

Lenovo recently filed a patent in which they tried to describe what its upcoming folding device would look like. The patent doesn’t offer anything crazy, you are already familiar with the concept. A device that’d fold inward or at least that’s what it seems from the initial impression, has a hinge mechanism as it should, helping in connecting the two displays.

Speaking of the hinge, Lenovo’s upcoming folding device is probably going to sport a Surface Book-like hinge which is a good thing assuming Lenovo is trying to create a foldable PC. But, if this patent is for their upcoming folding smartphone then I’d argue that it’d already put Lenovo at a disadvantage given the fact that a Surface Book-like hinge would make the smartphone super bulky.

The patent was filed way back in  September 2018 by Lenovo and it’s now available on USPTO website. You can read the official description of Lenovo’s upcoming folding device below.

A connecting assembly includes a plurality of link members, a hanging-hole-shaped fixing structure having openings configured to hole the plurality of link members, a first shaft and a second shaft coupled to the plurality of link members, and a first fixing member and a second fixing member for coupling to a first display region and a second display region of the flexible display screen respectively.

The first and the second fixing members are further coupled to the first shaft and the second shaft respectively. The openings of the hanging-hole-shaped fixing structure are movable to arrange the plurality of link members at different distances from each other, in order to bend the flexible display screen upon a force being exerted on the flexible display screen to cause a relative motion between the first and second display regions of the flexible display screen.
