Cortana can already be used to read and send text messages, but it seems Microsoft may be planning to take things further, with the latest internal builds of Windows 10 Mobile allowing you to set the digital assistant as your default SMS app.
The feature appeared in Build 10.0.14288 but does not appear useful at present, with no new capabilities from the Cortana app, and with no notifications being raised when you receive a new SMS. To see your SMS messages you also now have to manually open the Messaging app.
It is also not clear how exactly the feature will work eventually, and it may simply be a bug due to an engineer making a mistake in the app manifest, but it would be rather cool if Cortana could have conversations with people sending you SMS messages, as is already possible to a degree with the Quiet Hours feature.
