Joyn Rich Communication Service coming to Nokia Lumia 920 on Movistar, Vodafone and Orange

joyn-logo-620x475In a press release Telefonica announced that the Joyn Rich Communication Service, which is an IP-based messaging service controlled by operators, is coming to Windows Phone 8 and specifically the Nokia Lumia 920.

In the release they write:

Movistar, Vodafone and Orange announced the launch of the first devices with its rich communication service (RCS) under the brand Joyn ™ incorporated in the same way native to the operating system. The first phase will begin today, operators launched the first Device manufacturers like Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Nokia with embedded Joyn to improve the customer experience.

Specifically, Samsung Galaxy SIII models, LG Optimus L9, One S HTC, Nokia Lumia 920 and Sony Xperia Z will be the first models of these manufacturers will incorporate native Joyn the terminal, which will run gradually the rest of the portfolio of these manufacturers. Existing customers of these models may use the service by downloading a software update for your phone.

Joyn will initially support chat, file transfer and the sending of pictures and video during calls, all for free, with VOIP and video calling services to follow.

If fully deployed Joyn can be a powerful solution, primarily due to being standardized, cross-platform and cross-carrier.  RCS support is built into Windows Phone 8, suggesting the implementation may be better than expected.

Additionally, as is the case since the launch of the service for each of the three operators, customers  with any terminal Android 2.2 or higher can download the application from Google Play Joyn, will soon also be available for iOS.

Interoperability between Movistar, Vodafone and Orange is a reality since last November.
