There has been a long-standing rumour going round that the Windows 8 kernel is set to replace the Windows Phone kernel.
A recent job posting by Microsoft does little to dispel the rumour. The position for a Software Developer Engineer in Windows Phone is looking for a person with experience in:
Systems and Platforms: New Hardware Bringup, Advanced System Architectures, Advanced Windows Driver Development and Windows Internals, Mobile Architectures and modern SoC, Graphics Architectures and mobile GPUs, High Performance Architectures, Platform and Framework Creation
The request for Windows Internals experience and Advanced Windows Driver Development is somewhat odd for a Windows Phone position, but would be completely appropriate if Microsoft was trying to shoehorn Windows into Windows Phone.

Own and independently deliver complex software components of our products
Work in close partnership with a team of diverse and talented peers in various disciplines including design, hardware, PM’s and SDET’s for sustained long term success
Partner with the architects and the technical leadership team to deliver solid technical designs
Maintain an unwavering focus on our customers and the value you can deliver to them
