Instagram already allows direct messaging between users. According to the latest report by The Verge, Instagram is now developing a standalone messaging app called Threads which will act as a companion app for main Instagram app. Unlike Facebook Messenger app, Threads is meant to be used among close group of people.
Along with regular text, phone and video messaging, Threads will also support sharing of location, speed, and battery life information. Facebook is currently testing this app internally. Another important feature of Threads is automatic sharing. Your close friends can always have real-time information about your location, speed, and more. This app could also be used among family members.
Facebook recently announced that it will soon start releasing new consumer-focused apps under different brand name. Instead of Facebook, these new apps will be published under the developer name “NPE Team, from Facebook.” My guess is that Threads will be published under NPE Team name.
