Huawei CEO talks 1000 euro folding phones and 200 inch smartphones

In an interview with German publication De Welt, Huawei’s CEO of Consumer technology Richard Yu expressed a vision of the future for the company which is at the very least ambitious and bordering on staggering.
In the interview he expressed the belief that his company will soon overtake Samsung in market share, saying “We will pass Samsung and be the market leader by next year at the latest. We are already close.”
He already felt his company was well ahead of Apple in terms of innovation, saying that Apple would find it difficult to launch a folding phone this year or even next.
Of course, a 2300 Euro phone is not exactly a mass market device, but he expressed the belief that in a year or two the phones will hit the 1000 Euro mark, and eventually cost less than 500 euro, particularly as other OEMs start producing them. He unironically suggested that despite Huawei’s patents on the technology Chinese OEMs are likely to imitate their devices and bring down prices.
Of course, if the device was a run-away success he says he could “accelerate mass production at any time.”
Yu noted that while phones which unfold to larger screens would become standard in the future, in a few years he expected phones to have 100 to 200 inch ( 5 meters) screens. This would of course not be possible via physical devices, but via augmented reality glasses, and he said Huawei was already working on such devices, and would not need 5 years to bring them to market.
Huawei is of course under a lot of pressure from US over spying allegations, which Yu strenuously refuted, but he noted that, if forced, the company would shift from western operating systems such as Windows and Android to their own in-house solution, but that they prefer “to work with the ecosystems of Google and Microsoft.”
Huawei devices are already incredibly popular in Europe, suggesting the globally ambitious company may have what it takes to bring their massive vision to life after all.
