Here is how to use Find My Phone

Losing a smartphone or even a feature phone isn’t fun. Most of the operating system come with a feature called “find my phone” which lets users find their phone from a web app pretty easily. Just like every other major operating system, Windows Phone comes with the feature as well. So how to use the find my phone feature on your Windows Phone? Let’s find out!

When you setup a new Windows Phone, first, head over to the Settings. Scroll down a bit and you’ll see “find my phone”. Open find my phone and you’ll be presented with some simple options. On find my phone, there are two setting available. The first one lets you use push notification for sending commands instead of using SMS. I personally enable the feature as the SMS some time may not work. If you want to send commands using notifications, enable the feature and if not, keep it disabled.

The second option on the page is very useful which will allow Microsoft to save your Windows Phone’s location periodically to make it easier for you to find. Once again, if you want Microsoft to save the location of your smartphone periodically, tick the option and if not, keep it disabled. I recommend keeping the feature enabled as it will give you a good idea of where you may lose your phone or where was last seen.

That’s pretty much it on setting up find my phone. Now, how to lock, find, ring or erase your smartphone when you lose it? First, head over to the official Windows Phone website (http://windowsphone.com). On the top right of the website, you’ll see a dropdown that says “My Phone”. Hover over the dropdown and you’ll see an option to sign in. After that, sign in with your Microsoft account (it needs to be the same as on your Windows Phone). After signing in, you’ll be redirected to the homepage. Once again, hover over the dropdown on the top right-hand side and you’ll see an option that states “Find my Phone” – click on that.

After that, you’ll be presented with a section full of your smartphone info and at the bottom, there will be a map. On the first section, you’ll be able to get your phone number, name, last seen location and time. On the right-hand side of that section, there are three options available: Ring, Lock and Erase. findmy3

When you click on Ring, the website will connect with your Windows Phone and ring. It’s a basic feature that lets you find your phone at home pretty easily. The Lock feature will let you lock your Windows Phone and display a message on the display (limited to 160 characters). There is also a feature on the lock section which lets you ring the phone as well. Once you get your phone back, you’ll be able to unlock it using your password.

Last but not least is the Erase feature that will allow you to restore your Windows Phone to factory state. Once you click on that, it will Erase your Windows Phone and delete all the data. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to use Find My Phone after erasing your Windows Phone. At the bottom of the page, there is a map which shows the current location of your Windows Phone. The map will show the road name, there is also a bird-eye view for the app.

That’s pretty much it. Finding your phone is pretty easy with the find my phone feature on Windows Phone. It’s one of the most important features that you should activate after setting up a new Windows Phone. If you’ve any questions, make sure to let us know in the comment section below!
