It’s no secret that Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful video games of all time, but according to industry analyst Doug Creutz, it’s outgrossed even Hollywood’s biggest films, making more money than the likes of Star Wars or Gone With The Wind.
Creutz, managing director and senior research analyst at the financial firm Cowen, spoke with MarketWatch regarding GTA V’s success. Since its launch in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V has made around $6 billion from 90 million units of the game sold across the world. To put that into perspective, both Gone With The Wind and Star Wars brought in roughly $3 billion each when adjusted for inflation. Creutz believes that even adding home entertainment revenue from DVDs, which he estimates at $1 billion, they still wouldn’t come close to GTA V’s numbers. This does not take into account how much an entire franchise has grossed, as the Star Wars series has easily made nearly $9 billion across all films, and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is well over $14 billion.
“I think it’s a wild outlier,” Creutz said. “I think maybe with the exception something Nintendo has made—Mario Brothers—but aside from that there’s never been a console game that’s sold so many units.”
There’s a possibility that Rockstar could strike gold again with Red Dead Redemption 2, but Creutz says it’s hard to imagine the same level of success.
“That’s not to say Rockstar won’t have other big hits—it may—but another ‘GTA V’ isn’t likely,” said Creutz. “Michael Jackson had a lot of hit albums but he only had one ‘Thriller.’”
