On May 20, 2025, at Google I/O, the company introduced Android XR, its new operating system for smart glasses and headsets, developed in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm. This platform integrates Google’s Gemini AI assistant, enabling users to interact with their environment through voice commands, gestures, and visual cues.

The Android XR glasses, designed for everyday use, feature a discreet display, camera, microphones, and speakers. They support functionalities like real-time language translation, navigation, and media playback. Gemini AI enhances these experiences by providing context-aware assistance, such as identifying objects or translating conversations on the fly.

Google has partnered with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to ensure the smart glasses are both functional and stylish. Additionally, Samsung’s Project Moohan headset, set to launch later this year, will run on Android XR, offering immersive experiences akin to Apple’s Vision Pro.

With Android XR, Google aims to create an open ecosystem for extended reality devices, allowing developers to build applications using familiar Android tools. The platform supports existing Android apps and introduces XR-specific features, positioning Google as a significant player in the wearable tech market.
