Starting May 31, 2025, Google will shut down its legacy Data Migration Service for on-prem Microsoft Exchange. Announced on May 14, this change affects migrations from Exchange 2010, 2013, and 2016. Admins won’t be able to start new transfers using the old tool after the deadline, but ongoing migrations can continue until finished.
Google is pushing admins to switch to the Google Workspace Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GWMME) tool. GWMME supports on-prem Exchange servers and runs only on Windows machines. It’s the primary replacement for those handling migrations without Microsoft 365.

For organizations moving data from Exchange Online (Microsoft 365), Google now offers a redesigned Data Migration Service. This updated tool handles cloud-based migrations and supports email, calendar, and contact data.
End users won’t see any changes or need to take action. This shift mainly impacts Workspace admins managing infrastructure changes or mergers.
Google recommends reviewing documentation on GWMME and the updated Data Migration Service to avoid any delays or data loss. The move marks a clear shift away from legacy support in favor of updated, more compatible tools.
