Google Drive has made it even easier to use its Gemini AI with new updates. Since launching Gemini in the side panel of Google Drive, users have been able to summarize documents, get quick facts from PDFs, and create files or folders. Now, Google is adding a new feature to make starting conversations with Gemini simpler.
Users can now click the “Add sources” button after entering a question or prompt in the side panel. This lets Gemini know which files to refer to when generating a response. Additionally, users can drag and drop files directly into the side panel to guide Gemini’s answers. This update gives users more control and visibility over the sources Gemini uses in conversations.

Admins can enable this feature for users by turning on smart features and personalization in the Admin console. For end users, Google has provided a Help Center to explain how to collaborate with Gemini in Google Drive.
The new feature will gradually roll out in two phases. Rapid Release domains will start seeing it on May 1, 2025. Scheduled Release domains will see it from May 14, 2025. Gemini AI will be available for Google Workspace customers, including Business Standard and Plus, and those with the Gemini Education add-on.
