On May 20, 2025, Google rolled out AI Overviews globally, now live in over 200 countries and supporting more than 40 languages. This expansion, announced at its I/O developer conference, brings AI-generated summaries directly into Search, offering quick answers without requiring users to click through links.

The company says these summaries show up only when its systems judge them useful. Early results suggest users agree — search activity jumped 10 percent in places like the U.S. and India. But there’s a tradeoff: publishers are seeing up to 30 percent fewer clicks, raising fresh concerns about traffic loss and content visibility.

Google’s not backing off. The feature is now part of its standard search interface for logged-in users. It pulls information from multiple sources and links out to relevant pages. Still, many sites worry users won’t bother clicking when the summary already answers their question.

Despite the drop in site visits, Google Search remains dominant, racking up 136 billion monthly visits. With rivals like OpenAI and Perplexity trying to change how people search, Google is betting big on AI summaries to keep users inside its platform — and off everyone else’s.
