Game Review: Super Monkey Ball

Even though Super Monkey Ball’s Marketplace reviews are filled with people saying the controls are terrible, the game is actually pretty good!

Overall Score: 4/5

The gameplay is really great and the presentation is good. The lasting value, however, really hurts the game. It barely manages a 4/5 thanks to rounding up the 3.666 score.

Gameplay: 5/5

Do not trust the Marketplace reviews when they say the controls are absolutely terrible. The controls take about 15 minutes to get used to, but they work perfectly. You do have to hold the phone at a certain angle to play (sitting upright or laying forward on a bed works), but once you’re accustomed to how the accelerometer and camera in the game behaves, it controls just fine! The game itself is plenty of fun. All of the levels have timers so you can compete for faster times, and they also have banannas to collect, so you can try to collect as many as possible. There’s plenty of variation and change in difficulty as you progress through the game. Some levels require precise movements while others send you zooming down ramps. The levels are always fun and satisfying.

Presentation: 4/5

The game looks great and sounds even better. The music is themed for each world and helps carry you through the game. The sound effects perfectly clue you in about what is happening in the game. And the 3D world looks crisp and detailed. However, the monkey inside the ball is terribly animated in 2D, and is low resolution. That low res animation doesn’t fit with the game’s otherwise great presentation!

Lasting Value: 2/5

The game can be completed in less than two hours, which is very short, especially for a game that costs $4.99. After you complete it, you can go back and try to collect all the banannas, or go for faster times, but there’s not too much incentive to replay it.
