Game Review: Shoot 1UP

Challenge yourself in this hectic arcade shooter.

Overall Score: 3/5

The gameplay is good, but lasting value could use some improvement in my opinion.

Gameplay: 4/5

In this crazy arcade shooter you control up to 30 ships at once… that’s right! You’ve got to focus on dodging bullets and killing enemies all while expanding and shrinking your fleet of ships to avoid incoming enemies. It definitely challenges your skills and is pretty unique and exciting! However, there’s a flaw in the game: You can’t simply tap on the screen to use the shield (even though that’s what you’re supposed to do). If you’re moving your ship and you tap on the screen, it does nothing. That’s unfortunate, because releasing the screen and then tapping can cost you a life. Nevertheless, the gameplay is real fun and engaging. There’s also a great variety of enemies and bosses.

Presentation: 3/5

The visuals look good overall. The music and sound effects go real well with the game. However, you have to sit through a tutorial every single time you try to play the game, which wastes ~30 seconds and becomes really annoying.

Lasting Value: 3/5

Shoot 1Up doesn’t have any levels… it takes the classic game approach and forces you to play through the entire campaign without ever losing, otherwise you start from the beginning again. I personally think that it is a bad style for a mobile game, since people often just want to pick up their phone and play for 10 minutes while waiting for a haircut for example. The quickplay mode sends you through the same enemies and bosses too… so it gets boring real quick. You can change your difficulty levels and actually adjust the speed of the game which is neat, but it simply ought to have levels in my opinion.QRCode
