Game Review: Redd Mobile

Redd Mobile is a fun maze/puzzle game where you have to navigate a path to collect coins while avoiding booby traps.

Overall Score: 4/5Redd Mobile

Redd’s gameplay and presentation is surprisingly impressive! Although it is simple, the gameplay has pleasant and challenging variety and the presentation is well polished.

Gameplay: 5/5

The goal of the game is to make your way across a tomb and collect as many coins and jewels as you go. The navigational game board is dictated by a large number of small squares which you can move across. Some of these squares have booby traps hidden on them, but you won’t know that until you walk into them, since the room is pitched black! You control your character by drawing a path for him to travel from an overhead view, and then click Walk and watch him attempt to traverse the path you created. The controls are accurate and work well with your finger. At first, this game may seem like everything comes down to luck, but once you read the How To Play slides, you will see that there are a number of different booby traps which all are laid out on the maps in certain orders. For example, the arrows will always have four squares, horizontally or vertically, booby trapped. Using this knowledge, you actually have to use some logic and think about what path will avoid the obstacles. Try to get as many coins and finish the levels without loosing all of your lives! You will get a score based off of how many coins/jewels you collect and how many booby traps you avoid.

Presentation: 4/5

The visuals are quite simple, but when you click Walk and the character begins to move through the dark, the dynamic lighting of the torch he carries and the visual effects of the booby traps killing the character are satisfyingly enjoyable. The music is pretty good but is short and ends up repeating the same song time and time again. The sound effects for collecting coins and falling into booby traps are great. The game does take some time to load, especially since it has a 15 second unskippable video that plays every time you open the game, but the load time after that will hopefully improve with the next WP7 software update from Microsoft.

Lasting Value: 4/5

Working your way through the three different Expeditions will probably take you about 3 hours. There are plenty of high scores already entered which you can compete with and compare your own success to, but there isn’t an online leaderboard, so you can only compare scores locally. There aren’t any other gameplay modes, but the game satisfyingly increases in difficulty as you progress through the different expeditions.
