Game Review: Pitfall!

Microsoft yet again releases one of these classic Atari arcade games for Windows Phone 7, while all of their users scream for something new like Sonic or Hydro Thunder GO.

Overall Score: 1/5

The controls in Game Room: Pitfall! completely ruin the experience and make the game nearly impossible to play on the phone. The gameplay itself is quite outdated and not nearly as fun as more popular classics like Mario.

Gameplay: 1/5

With bad controls come bad gameplay. If this was your first time touching a WP7 device, you would be asking what’s wrong with the touchscreen, since the directional control pad seems to never work right. Trying to precisely move and jump at the same time is nearly impossible, since the character will either jump straight up or walk forward and then try to jump when it’s already too late. Pitfall! revolves around precision maneuvering, so these crappy controls completely ruin the game. The gameplay itself isn’t that interesting. You face a number of different challenges, but they are repetitive and not extremely interesting. The game does take some skill though, which makes it fun to improve at and compete in.

Presentation: 2/5

The game does load fast and the music sounds good, but the design of the virtual buttons isn’t impressive and the layout of the screen doesn’t have much thought put into it. The game even lacks a lives meter.

Lasting Value: 1/5

Since the controls are so bad, you won’t want to play the game for very long. If the controls actually worked, the lasting value would be quite high. The online leaderboards are fantastic, but they’re no use when you are constantly frustrated trying to play the game.
