Game Review: IonBallEX

Finally a quality breakout-style game comes to the Xbox Live collection as a WP7 exclusive!

Overall Score: 4/5

With fun gameplay, great lasting value, and smooth presentation, this game is a high quality title!

Gameplay: 4/5

There are so many powerups, upgrades, and variation in this game that it always stays exciting! It would receive a 5/5, except the controls aren’t perfect. You have the option of using either slide or tilt controls. The slide controls let you drag your finger anywhere on the bottom of the screen and the paddle will move accordingly. However, the paddle doesn’t track your finger, so you sometimes find yourself running out of space to slide your finger and therefore missing the ball. The tilt controls work decently, but the screen automatically turns off after a minute, so you have to keep on tapping the screen with your finger! Stick with the slide controls, they’re the best. The upgrade system is really fun since it encourages you to score the most XP possible on a level (basically, don’t die and you get 100 extra XP points), so that you can buy more upgrades which are crucial to beating the game. Overall, it’s a lot of fun!

Presentation: 4/5

The game looks nice, and has a cool visual theme. It also runs really smoothly and doesn’t take a long time to load. The music is also really fun, but it does get repetitive.

Lasting Value: 5/5

Playing through all 35 levels can last about three and a half hours, which is pretty great! Then, there’s the leaderboards and achievements to explore. Replaying the game is also fun, since you can pick different upgrades next time around and try to get a higher score.
