Play Halo as a top-down shooter on your phone!
Overall Score: 3/5
Frame rate and crashing issues, touchy controls, and mediocre lasting value keeps this game from being great.
The controls in Halo: Spartan Assault simply aren’t as good as they should be. The controls in Gun Bros are smoother and more accurate for example. Nevertheless, the game is still playable and the excellent variation keeps the gameplay score high. There are all the classic weapons, vehicles, and enemies found in the real Halo game. You can pilot a Wraith, man a turret, and more! Missions are also perfectly balanced and varied so that the entire game stays exciting.
The game is occasionally hit by frame rate issues during moments where you are firing turrets or shooting vehicle weapons, causing the game to crawl to a stutter. And it seems to crash quite frequently (crashed twice while filming a 10 minute review, and at least 4 other times while I played it). Nevertheless, when the game is working, the visuals look excellent and the sound effects and music are top notch.
Lasting Value: 3/5
Playing through the game will take about 3 hours. Combine that with ridiculous in-app purchases to unlock weapons, and Halo becomes ridiculously overpriced. For $6.99, we should get the WHOLE game. You don’t even get to keep the guns you buy, you have to buy them EVERY mission!
