Game Review: Centipede

If you expected Xbox Live for WP7 games to be impressive, the last two weeks’ releases have been quite the contrary. Centipede was last week’s title, and is a simple remake of the classic arcade game.

Overall Score: 2/5

Compared to Asteroids Deluxe, Centipede is basically as bad. Centipede has some visual issues that once again impact the gameplay, which then impacts the lasting value.

Gameplay: 2/5

When the frame rate is running normally, the game is plenty of fun to play. The controls however, are a bit odd, since you’re actually rolling a free-spinning ball with your left hand like you would with an actual arcade game. Once you get used to the controls, they work fine. The gameplay is exciting and classic, but the frequent lag found in the game completely ruins the experience and often causes you to die.

Presentation: 2/5

The load speeds and interface of the game are fantastic, but the visuals are disappointing. They look fine, but after playing the game for a little while, you’re sure to run into some frame rate lag, which completely ruins your game. However, the sounds are also really good.

Lasting Value: 2/5

Centipede has plenty of elements to make it last a long time (Medals for high scores, Achievements, a thorough leaderboards system, long lasting gameplay), but the frustrating frame rate issues cause you to give up on the game.
