Game Review: Annexation

This unique strategy game is free!

Overall Score: 2/5

With the laggy gameplay, I can’t recommend this game in its current state.

Gameplay: 2/5

If you’re like me, you’ve never heard of this game before. You can expand your clump of cells to any color of your choice that you’re touching. It’s a pretty neat idea, and the game has some potential for strategy. However, if you enable the toughest AI, the game takes FOREVER to make moves. With two other AI players at the “best” difficulty, it took over 25 seconds for the other two players to pick their moves…. that’s just ridiculous. And the easier AI difficulties are so easy it’s not worth playing. With these insane wait speeds, I can’t recommend the game. However, if that gets fixed along with the other bugs, it would be worth checking out. It also has local multiplayer so you could pass off the phone and play with your friends.

Presentation: 2/5

The game looks pretty nice visually, but it never actually saves your player names. Also, the slow wait speeds factor into the presentation… disabling the animations did nothing to improve the wait speeds. And the game could benefit from some sound effects. Also returning from multitasking freezes the game and requires you to press the Back button and then “Continue”.

Lasting Value: 2/5

With the ridiculously slow AI, I can’t even play a single game on the toughest difficulty… therefore I can’t see many people playing this game for a long time. The same type of game on Android is INSTANT.
