Forza Horizon 5 could release next year before the new instalment of Forza Motorsport for the Xbox Series X, according to industry insider Jeff Grubb.

Speaking to Xbox Empire podcast, Grubb indicated that Playground Games are likely to break their 2-year cycle release tradition and release two Forza Horizon games before the next Forza Motorsport game hits the shelves.

“We saw Forza Motorsport get teased a few months ago [but] I think we might get the next Forza Horizon game first and I think that might be coming this coming year,” Grubb said; transcribed by VGC.

No details were given regarding the upcoming game’s locale, but with fans clamouring for a Tokyo-themed game in the series, Forza Horizon 5 could finally be the one.

“They’re in a weird situation where for some reason Playground says it does seem like they may be ready to go first,” Grubb explained. “I think I know the setting, but I’m going to let them announce it.”

The latest release in the series was Forza Horizon 4 in 2018, which recently saw a performance and visual update for the Xbox Series X and S. Prior to this, Motorsport and Horizon followed a strict release cycle of zigzagging between the two each year, so according to this, Forza is long overdue a new entry in the franchise.

Turn 10 stated that the 8th Forza Motorsport entry, considered a soft-reboot, is in early development and is a confirmed Xbox Series X/S exclusive. Known simply as Forza Motorsport, the game is confirmed to be chock-full of new features, especially considering Turn 10 were given extra time to make the game the best that it can be.

Playground Games were also granted with extra time to work on Forza Horizon 5 and are currently working on a re-invigoration of Fable for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Considering past entries in the series, Forza Horizon 5 could possibly be a cross-gen release for Xbox, especially with its long development time.

Here’s the game’s official, but vague, description:

Fable returns with a new beginning for the legendary franchise. Explore a land of fantastical creatures and wondrous places. Developed by Playground Games for Xbox Series X and Windows 10.
