After a brutal homophobic attack committed in-game, a group of Fallout 76 players have been banned for life from the post-apocalyptic shooter.
Using the game’s proximity-based chat system, a group of players took it upon themselves to bully and harass players wandering the wasteland.
Lead by a user called NathanTheHicc, the self-named “Gay Eliminators” group hurled abuse at 76’s players. “We’ve come to eliminate all the gays”, “decontaminate the aids”, and “queer down”, were just a handful of the homophobic phrases used during the play session.
A Twitter user by the name of AJ posted footage of the incident on Twitter, tagging Bethesda in the post. The video contains some very offensive language.
Called themselves the "gay eliminators" "cleansing the wasteland of the queers" "know what we did to your people back then, we killed them" THIS is the stuff said to us tonight when playing Fallout. @bethesda @BethesdaStudios @Fallout #Fallout #Fallout76 pic.twitter.com/zwPuz7AbsG

According to an interview with Eurogamer, the incident started after one of AJ’s teammates commented on the appearance of one of the hostile group’s characters.
“The three of us were having a good time and talking to him and then one of us commented on his character or his character’s outfit being cute. AJ said, ‘I don’t fuck with that homo shit’ and left.”
After the wail of abuse handed to them, AJs group changed servers so they wouldn’t have to put up with the abuser’s horrible and tormenting activities.
After the tweet was forwarded to community managers at Bethesda, NathanTheHicc and his group were all given a lifetime ban for their activities.
The abuser had his own take on the matter, however, saying, “My version of the incident is more or less the same as the public has taken it, the only differences being the fact that I don’t hate gay people. It was just a late night of having fun and after the first encounter (seen on my channel) we felt it would be fun to offend them somehow. You can call that evil but I think it’s just playful immaturity.
“I do not regret the incident. I will not apologize given the opportunity. I don’t plan on doing anything like this in the future but to be fair I didn’t plan the initial incident, I just found them and decided to go through with it.”
No matter if the abuse was meant for “playful immaturity” or not, the attack was horrendous and went way past joking.
Bethesda has said that those who experience similar abuse should report players either through Xbox One, PS4 or Bethesda.net services.
“We do not tolerate this kind of behavior by any of our players, nor towards any of our players,” Bethesda said. “We will continue to investigate claims of misconduct or abuse – along with Microsoft and Sony – and take action when necessary.”
