Social network giant Facebook is rumored to be working on a new smart speaker. Facebook is currently building a smart speaker, possibly powered by the company’s “M” personal assistant. While there isn’t a lot of information available about the smart speaker as of yet, the device is expected to have a huge 15-inch touch screen, according to a report from Digitimes. The device’s display will be built by LG, and it’s apparently getting released in the first quarter of 2018.
It isn’t clear as to how the company is utilizing the 15-inch touch screen won the smart speaker, but it may be a competitor for Microsoft’s Home Hub project which is yet to be officially announced. Microsoft’s Home Hub is part of the company’s ambition to reinvent the family PC, as it’ll include shared experiences built specifically for multiple users. Of course, neither the Microsoft Home Hub or the Facebook smart speakers are official at the moment, so we can’t really tell whether they are actually related at all.
Facebook’s smart speaker does seem quite ambitious, however. The company’s “M” personal assistant isn’t as powerful as the likes of Cortana, Google Assistant, or Siri and it’s also not available to a wide range of users at the moment. With Amazon leading the smart speaker market and newcomers like Microsoft just getting started, Facebook will have a hard time getting people to buy its speaker. Integrating Facebook into the smart speaker could be one way of getting customers to buy its smart speaker, but that could also drive some customers away from the product.
For now, Facebook’s smart speaker remains a rumor — so make sure to take it with a grain of salt until more information regarding the device is available.
