Facebook purchased WhatsApp and Instagram years ago, and the firm now wants everyone to know it. Facebook will be rebranding its apps to have a ‘by Facebook’ tag, so users will know more immediately that the services and apps they are using come directly from Facebook.
We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook,” a Facebook spokesperson told The Information, who were the first to break the story. Users will see ‘WhatsApp by Facebook’ everywhere in the app where ‘WhatsApp’ previously used to appear by itself. The same will go for Instagram. The changes came as a surprise to some at the two companies who had presumed they would still be allowed the level of independence they were used to.
It’s not clear when these changes will be rolling out, but they are likely to precede Facebook’s all-in-one Messaging app which will launch at some point over the next year.
