Extension support is one of the promises of the new Edge browser by Microsoft, but few expected these to be available on mobile.
It would therefore come as no surprise that the Edge browser on Windows phones will not come with extension support, such as an Ad blocker, on release, but Microsoft program managers Sean Lyndersay and Charles Morris did reveal at BUILD 2015 that these are in fact on the roadmap.
Extension support will be missing on release on phones due to UI issues related to extra buttons which the extensions sometimes add, and also because extensions can sometimes be resource intensive and be unstable, two issues which are more critical on phones than on the desktop.
If Microsoft can however pull it off it would be a first for a mobile operating system, with neither Google’s Chrome browser or Apple’s Safari supporting this feature on iOS and Android.
