While many users may dislike carrier services for whatever reason, sometimes carriers do customize firmware of devices to make the device even better. The Lumia 640 is one of those devices. EE UK has announced that the Microsoft Lumia 640 will support WiFi calling in the UK on their network. There will be no special software or app required to run this, rather they would make use of the phones native dialler and telephony capabilities.
“We’re delighted to announce that we’ll be the first network to launch Wifi calling in the UK when the Samsung Galaxy S6, the S6 Edge and the Lumia 640 become available on EE.”
The feature will be locked to firmware of course, this means that devices bought outside EE may not make use of the feature even if they do use an EE sim card – unless they flash their firmware.
EE also notes that future Microsoft branded devices will come with the feature enabled, but no word on current devices.
The Lumia 640 is slated for a global roll-out next month and we’ll be able to put it through its paces in due time. In the meantime, are you an EE customer or interested in the 640? Let us know in the comments
