EdgeHTML 14 now available for all Windows 10 users

Microsoft today announced the stable channel release of EdgeHTML 14 with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. For developers, they can test Microsoft Edge and versions of IE8 through IE11 using free virtual machines. The updated EdgeHTML 14 VMs are now available for download. Visit this page for more details.

Some new features coming as part of EdgeHTML 14 are listed below,

  • Microsoft Edge supports WOFF 2.0 fonts — a new format that reduces the size of a font file by more than 30%, helping web pages load faster.
  • Starting with EdgeHTML 14, the open-source WebM container format and the VP9 video and Opus audio codecs are supported in Microsoft Edge. These are available to websites that use Media Source Extensions (MSE) to adaptively stream video content.
  • Microsoft Edge will support the Speech Synthesis APIs defined in the W3C Web Speech API Specification. These APIs allow websites to convert text to audible speech with customizable voice and language settings. With them, website developers can add and control text-to-speech features specific to their page content and design.
