Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile UI is one that is both familiar and alien to many Windows Phone users. On the outside, it keeps the bright bold tiles of Windows Phone with some extra notification feature, but open a native Windows 10 app and things start to get a little murky.
I’m not going t comment much on the Windows 10 UI at this point, that’s what a review is for. However, it is undeniable that the design philosophy of Windows 10 is much different from that of Windows Phone 8.1. It is much more icon heavy than text heavy for starters. Where one would have found large bold text in previous iterations of the OS, there now exist thin, wireframe icons.
The beautiful image based photos panorama has been replaced by a more minimalistic pivot based design in Windows 10 Mobile, However, apps like the rather spartan dialer and messaging app look even better in Windows 10 Mobile.
In addition to the general OS apps, apps which are built for Windows 10 devices tend to look good on all screen sizes (I’ve tested from 4.5 to 5.7) as opposed to the old Windows Phone 8 UI which was heavily optimized for smaller screens.
With all these taken into account, which design language do you prefer better? Windows 10 Mobile or Windows Phone 8.1 – or perhaps even Windows Phone 7 and 8.
