2014’s Destiny was a huge title for PlayStation. With DLC exclusivity and early content arriving first on Sony’s platform, the two brands were intrinsically linked despite the game’s now rocky reputation.
For Destiny 2, developer Bungie wanted to incorporate cross-saves for character progression, but the idea was blocked by Sony.
Revealed through Jason Schreier’s Splitscreen podcast, Bungie allegedly told him that they wanted to allow character transfers before the game’s Expansion, Forsaken, released.
“I heard that Bungie wanted to do character transfers for PS4, PC – before Forsaken came out – but Sony wouldn’t allow it,” Schreier revealed. “Sony is just like, we want people to associate Destiny with PS4, even if that means screwing over other players.”
Sony’s historical refusal of cross-play games makes this a believable situation. Until recently, the company refused to allow cross-play for games like Minecraft, Fortnite and even Rocket League.
With larger titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare aiming for cross-play on all platforms, Sony is finally bending to the will of developers.
