If you have been wondering whether to root for Apple Pay or MCX CurrentC, MCX may just have settled it.
The Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) is part of a coalition which includes consumer giant Walmart who are going up against Apple Pay with their own proprietary credit-cardless system based on QRCodes vs Apple’s standard-based NFC-based system.
The service relies on an app on your phone, linked to your bank account, which scans a QRCode presented by the merchant and then authenticates the transaction in the cloud. Members of the coalition have disabled NFC in their payment terminals and are confining phone payments to just their QRCode system.
Dekkers Davidson, CEO of MCX, has now revealed to The Register that the company is not planning to create such an app for Windows Phone or Blackberry.
While Apple Pay will of course never support Windows Phone, at least with the NFC terminals available there is some hope Softcard will eventually deliver their promised Windows Phone app. It seems CurrentC never plans to support Windows Phone, suggesting for now pressuring retailers to keep NFC terminals active is the best bet for Windows Phone users in USA.
