Cult classic Contra and other games are joining backward compatibility today

When Larry Hryb tweeted out the games joining backward compatibility today, we were initially underwhelmed because his first message said that 3D Ultra Minigolf, Gin Rummy and Golf: Tee It Up! would be joining the service today. However, this was followed by another message which said that Contra and RoboBlitz would be available on Xbox One as well. Contra is Konami’s cult classic and has been a fan-favorite for decades now. The series debuted in 1987 as a coin-operated arcade game simply titled Contra, which was followed by the release of Super Contra in 1988, and several sequels produced for various home platforms after that.

We haven’t received a good Contra game in ages and none of them compare to the original. Not only did the original give gamers great gameplay when it came to shooting mechanics, it took place in a rich world which was unlike anything seen before. The combination of jungle environments and other military installations was spectacular and the title managed to evoke a sense of exploration despite the fact that the combat was challenging. This is just one of the many reasons why it’s an evergreen classic.

3D Ultra Minigolf, Gin Rummy, Golf: Tee It Up! and RoboBlitz are great titles but Contra definitely outshines them all. All of these other games are casual experiences but Contra is definitely a hardcore adventure which will have you rage-quitting if you aren’t cautious in your approach. If you haven’t played it before, you should because it’s a significant milestone in the history of video games. Plus, it’s just a blast to shoot your way through the levels!
