Microsoft’s Cortana is getting a huge usability update in Windows 10 Build 14316.  While Microsoft announced some of those features at /Build/ last week, this is the first time insiders will be able to use and test them actively on machines.

Easier setup

Cortana is now easier to set up on devices in regions which support Cortana. Microsoft says that if one is in a region supported by Cortana but does not have a supported language installed, Cortana will now help download the speech packages required for most users.

Cross device sync

Microsoft introduced the ability to send SMS messages through Cortana and be alerted of missed call notifications, now the feature set of Cortana is expanding for both Windows and Android devices. Cortana will now send your PC notifications from your phone if your battery is low in order to remind you to charge it.

Aside from that, Cortana will be able to carry out features like finding, locking and ringing phones which may be misplaced, lost or stolen – a feature which was once limited to the Windows account site.

Finally, Cortana can now send maps directions from one mobile device to another. So if you start a search on one PC, you can now have the directions sent to your phone to enable you to continue navigation.

Microsoft’s Cortana is available in 11 countries and has been active for more than 2 years. It is one of the headlining features of Windows Phone and Windows 10 devices and is now available on rival platforms such as Android and iOS devices. As Microsoft’s vision for the future grows to include bot like services like Cortana and a “mobility of experience”, Microsoft’s virtual assistant app will continue to gain more and more useful functionality.
