We wrote a week ago about difficulties Chinese Windows phone 7 users were having in downloading apps from Marketplace.
WPSauce has now been able to confirm that this is due to DNS Hijacking, with ISP’s (likely as part of the Great Firewall of China) providing incorrect DNS information for Marketplace. This is the same strategy that was used to block the Android Marketplace.
Fortunately the method also provides a work-around – setting outside DNS servers at the router level will allow users to still access Marketplace when on WIFI. Unfortunately this solution is not available while on 3G however.
Of course this issue will come a head soon when official Chinese Windows Phones are released by Nokia amongst others, and one can only surmise that China is looking for a filtered and censored Marketplace, which is of course less than ideal.
BTW, we also heard WMPoweruser.com is blocked in China. It would be interesting to have this confirmed.
