The original Halo Wars was a hit back when it released in 2009. It was one of the few real time strategy games that worked well with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard, and it did a good job realizing much of the potential that came with the Halo license. It was announced to be remastered and sold alongside Halo Wars 2’s Ultimate Edition a while ago, and now people who pre-ordered Halo Wars 2 Ultimate digitally should start receiving early access codes for the Definitive Edition of the original game. The codes are rolling out in waves, and anyone who purchased the game before December 14th should receive one today.
Since both Halo Wars 2 and Halo Wars: Definitive Edition are Xbox Play Anywhere titles, the redemption codes will work on both your Xbox One and your Windows 10 PC, and a single redemption gets you the game on both platforms. This is the very first time that any version of Halo Wars has been playable on PC, and it’s great to see it happen after being requested for years.
Halo Wars: Definitive Edition will completely launch in February, and this version of the game is technically incomplete. There’s still finishing touches missing, but it’s very late in development and all game modes are functional. Additionally, there’s a multiplayer game browser which replaces the matchmaking system.
You can find Halo Wars 2 in the Windows Store here.
