In the wake of the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, fans were left wondering what could possibly come next. Another enormous and impressive open-world RPG? Something closer to the series’ roots? Something entirely new?

It turns out that the latest instalment in the series is, strangely enough, not even an RPG. In fact, it’s not developed by Nintendo at all. The new game is from Brace Yourself Games and is a crossover with the iconic Crypt of the NecroDancer.

(It’s also technically not a main instalment in the The Legend of Zelda series but rather, a mashup-slash-spinoff.)

The game’s full title is ‘Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer feat. The Legend of Zelda’.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a roguelike rhythm game where you have to move to the beat in order to explore dungeons and defeat bosses. The player gets bonuses when moving and fighting in time to the beat while their actions are less effective when their rhythm is off.

Cadence of Hyrule is named after Crypt of the NecroDancer’s protagonist, Cadence. It appears that the game is set after the events of NecroDancer and Cadence finds herself in the kingdom of Hyrule after completing a mysterious crypt.

Cadence must team up with Link and Zelda as the trio go on a quest to save Hyrule from certain ruin. The game features 25 remixed Legend of Zelda tunes, weapons and skills from both game series, and both new and old enemies from the Zelda universe. The game’s graphics are also deeply reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.

Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer feat. The Legend of Zelda is due out on the Nintendo Switch sometime in spring 2019.
