BBC announce major WP iPlayer update but drops Radio support

The BBC has announced a significant update to their iPlayer app for Windows Phone with many new features.

Besides adding a new look and feel to the app, the update has now also added the following new features:

  • Adaptive bitrate support,  so those of you with poorer internet connections will still be able to watch content while those with faster connections will get the best playback quality available.
  • Support for subtitles.
  • Live TV streaming ,
  • Improved stability
  • Improved device compatibility

imageThe update has unfortunately removed support for streaming Radio, but the company said it is working on a separate Radio player, and would also look at supporting program downloads if Windows Phone’s market share rises more to justify the investment.

The free download, for UK readers, can be found in the Windows Phone Store here.
