Barcode scanning from the video stream using homebrew code

Yesterday we saw Shopsavvy complain that on Windows Phone 7 the user had to take a picture to scan a barcode, while on Android and the iPhone barcodes could be recognized directly from the video stream, making for a much better user experience.

Dan Ardelean knew Microsoft did have private APIs, not accessible to regular developers, which could make the same experience possible on Windows Phone 7 also.

Using the PhotoCamera class in Microsoft.Phone.Media.Extended and a ZXing port he was easily able to bring video-based barcode scanning to Windows Phone 7.  He notes he could see no reason why Microsoft could not give developers  access  to this assembly, and we really hope this is on the cards soon for the next update.
